A good magnet inquiry takes two minutes to write and saves weeks of back-and-forth. Everything the supplier needs fits on one page. Here is the checklist.
1. Grade and performance
Name the grade if you can — e.g. N42SH — but remember that suppliers define grades slightly differently. Also state the two numbers that matter: Br (magnetic strength) and Hcj (resistance to demagnetization and heat). If you don't know the grade, give the working conditions — temperature, opposing fields, required force — and let the supplier recommend one.
2. Dimensions and tolerances
Give length × width × thickness with tolerances, e.g. 10.0 ±0.05 × 6.0 ±0.05 × 2.0 ±0.03 mm. Complex shapes need a drawing with profile and angle callouts. Tolerances drive cost: tighter means grinding, which adds money and time. Use the loosest tolerance your design can live with.
3. Magnetization direction
The most frequently forgotten item — and the most expensive to get wrong. Mark the north-south direction on the drawing, and state the pole pattern: single-pole or multipole, and for rings how many poles, radial or axial.
4. Coating
NdFeB corrodes easily, so the coating is part of the spec. State the type — nickel is the default, zinc and epoxy common — the thickness, and any salt-spray test hours if the part must pass corrosion testing.
5. Quantity, inspection and lead time
State the quantity, how you want performance verified (e.g. magnetic flux measured with a Helmholtz coil), and the required delivery date. Custom shapes need tooling and plated parts need time — ask the supplier to confirm the schedule.
If you can, send a drawing. A sketch with dimensions, tolerances, magnetization direction and coating notes is worth more than any amount of text.
