Magnetic fields and liquids usually have nothing to do with each other — unless the liquid is a ferrofluid. Add a magnet and the fluid grows spikes; take it away and it flows like any other liquid.
What a ferrofluid is
A ferrofluid is a liquid with billions of nanoscale magnetic particles suspended in it — so small that they stay mixed instead of settling out. When a magnet comes near, the particles pull toward it and drag the liquid along. The fluid does not become a permanent magnet itself; it simply responds to an external field and returns to normal when the field leaves.
Why the spikes form
Those famous spikes are a balance of forces. The magnetic field pulls the fluid toward the strongest field, while surface tension tries to keep the surface smooth. The spikes are the compromise between the two — which is also why ferrofluid art and desk toys look so hypnotic.
Real jobs for a strange liquid
Ferrofluids are not just for decoration. Loudspeaker makers place a little ferrofluid in the voice coil gap, where it conducts heat away and damps vibration. Rotary shaft seals use ferrofluid held in place by a ring magnet — the fluid forms a liquid O-ring that seals hard drive spindles and vacuum chambers without friction. Shock absorbers use it for smooth, adjustable damping, and researchers are exploring it for drug delivery and medical studies.
Practical tip: handle ferrofluid with care — it is still a liquid, so keep it sealed and well away from electronics you value.
