The world's most common permanent magnet is probably on your fridge right now. Ferrite magnets — also called ceramic magnets — are dark gray blocks made from iron oxide and barium or strontium. They power loudspeakers, hold fridge doors shut and spin countless small motors. And they cost almost nothing.

Why ferrite is so popular

  • Cheap. The raw materials are abundant iron oxide and carbonate — no rare earths, no cobalt.
  • Hard to demagnetize. Ferrite resists outside magnetic fields, vibration and rough handling surprisingly well.
  • Never rusts. It is already an oxide, so it needs no coating — even outdoors or in salt air.

The catch: weak pull

Ferrite is the weakest of the main magnet families. A ferrite magnet of the same size pulls far less than a NdFeB one, so designers simply make ferrite magnets bigger. That is why your fridge magnet is a thin strip, but a large speaker contains a hefty ring of ferrite.

Where you meet ferrite every day

  • Loudspeakers and headphones — the ring magnet around the voice coil.
  • Fridge door seals and cabinet catches — flexible strips that quietly hold things shut.
  • Small motors — fans, wiper motors, toys and power tools.
  • Toys, badges and teaching magnets — wherever cost matters more than strength.

Even the flexible strip that keeps your fridge door closed is a bonded ferrite — magnetic powder mixed into rubber or plastic.

Ferrite is the everyday workhorse: cheap, tough and good enough for a huge range of products. When you need maximum pull in a small size, rare-earth magnets take over.
